Abolish the Federal Income Tax and Replace with Nothing
Opinion Piece by Christine Smith, Jan. 23, 2008
The federal income tax and the IRS must be abolished - and replaced with nothing. This can and must be done if we are ever to experience liberty in our personal and economic lives.
I ask you, what federal program or federal agency is so important to you that you would prefer to keep on paying the abominable income tax? Allowing the federal government to extort your hard earned money gives them great power over your life, and it results into the numerous oppressive intrusions of all manner of federal programs and unjust operations worldwide, combined with the taking away of the money you worked for and for which you far better than some government bureaucrat could choose to spend as you wish for yourself and family.
Some suggest a giant sales tax or flat tax, but all that does is rearrange your tax burden and how you pay it. The fact is, abolishing unconstitutional federal programs reduces the federal government's "need" to take your money. Cutting off this money supply to them will force them to return to the bare minimal constitutionally authorized functions of government (which can be financed by tariffs, excise taxes, etc. already received by them.)
The income tax is not necessary for the vital functions of government such as defense. The income tax is used as part of the total revenue to finance unnecessary, ineffective, unconstitutional programs the government has no business doing...you essentially receive no benefits for the income tax you pay...instead your money is used, for one thing, to pay interests on the federal debt.
We are a debtor nation; we owe foreign governments currency we do not have and we continue to build that debt. Un-funded obligations plague the core stability of this nation and thus the security of every American now and future generations. None of this benefits you. And all of this is a direct result of the artificially controlled economy and massive federal government spending.
Right now we are paying high taxes and have a monstrously big (and ever increasing) government and all the intrusions and invasions of your personal life that automatically come with such big government. To abolish the income tax and IRS will mean the monster of the federal government, by necessity, will have to shrink in size and power. That is the goal, for that is the only way we will recover and maintain liberty in this nation. Giving one's money to big government is giving away your liberty, freedom, your intrinsic right as a human being to profit from the fruits of your labor.
Eliminating harmful wrong government programs at every level is always to be fought for. But the key to creating a small government is to cut off money for all the unnecessary unconstitutional programs as well as the meddling in the conflicts of other nations.
I believe in a strong defense (funded adequately), as well as funding for other minimal functions of the federal government necessary to our nation's sovereignty and security. I'm not an economist (although over the last year I've been studying economics/American economy in detail), but based on the research I've read of economists, I am firmly convinced the income tax could be completely eliminated, replaced with nothing, and our nation's essential needs met.
Thus, if all such necessary functions of the federal government would be more than adequately funded, even now, if the income tax were abolished today, why do we the American people continue to elect big government politicians who only increase our tax burden? Sure they talk about small government and decreasing taxes, but hardly any of them boldly and courageously declare that the federal income tax is an unjust extortion of the American people, and thus dedicate themselves to its elimination and meanwhile consistently vote against all federal spending which is unconstitutional.
No, instead, we have politicians who use their votes to benefit states, industries, and foreign nations (to name just a few) with your money. There appears to be no end in sight to the endless federal subsidies/corporate welfare/bail-outs, foreign aid, nor to the contracts between the federal government (Pentagon procurement) with enterprises that benefit from our perpetual wars. From my research/reading, it appears we could cut Pentagon procurement in half and still be the strongest nation in the world.
Government spending must be cut. But thus far all we elect are "representatives" that believe forcing you to pay for programs supposedly benefiting other people is the answer - thus spending increases and liberty decreases. To end the income tax by legislative process will require electing true economic conservatives ( an extreme rarity these days) who will say "No" to increased government programs and who will demand an end to the out of control spending. Where are fiscally wise Senators and Congressmen who would do that?
Eliminating the income tax will not leave our government without adequate funding, it would simply necessitate that it downsize to its proper function, giving us efficient government. My reading of research and analysis of this matter, indicates that if the income tax were eliminated right now, it would require the federal government to revert back to somewhere between the 1984-1995 budget/spending. Even without the federal income tax, federal government revenue would be enormous (resulting from current corporate income taxes, FICA, federal excise taxes, and other taxes and fees.) Is this the ultimate answer? As a libertarian I say no it is not.. But it is a beginning - and a monumental one at that - all of us realize eliminating the income tax will not only be a huge step toward smaller government, it will mean greater liberty for all Americans.
Further, if only our government would exclude itself entirely from intervening in the economy, and allow us to have a true free market economy, we would not be continually suffering from the predictable result - inflation - of such an artificially controlled economy. It's the Federal Reserve that's responsible for inflation and the resulting economic crisis's we continually face in this country. Current control/production of money provides no control over government spending or its ability to inflate. Enormous congressional deficit spending is made possible by the Federal Reserve and it has destroyed any real value to our currency. We must demand an end to this artificially controlled economy which is responsible for millions of Americans financial crisis. The Federal Reserve must be abolished.
For every office I will support only individuals I know are committed to heading us in the direction of far less government power, size, and cost. We must, if we are to survive economically, shrink the size, power and the cost of the federal government. But they will only comply when we cut their funding.
Ending the federal income tax could essentially force the government to end its worldwide wars and military presence where it has no business being, force it to end the insane "war on drugs" and all the horrible suffering caused by it, force it to get out of education and agriculture and every other area it also has no business being involved in...Ending the income tax would be a major step in forcing the government to downsize - to operate within the means we the people designate - not which is dictated to us. It will mean an end to much government corruption and waste. I believe the ending of the federal income tax will be one of the major turnarounds our nation could make to set us on a path to liberty and prosperity.
Join me in never again voting for any tax increase at your local or state level (regardless of the "good cause"). Make politicians become accountable to you - they've got the money for the essentials if they cut the unnecessary expenditures...and the "good causes" of your community should be funded by private donors not by forcing people to pay for a charitable purpose.
Join me in only voting for those seeking any office who dedicate themselves to small government and who declare they will refuse to increase the size and spending of government - no exceptions.
The alternative is dismal: big government, big taxation, big intrusion, and big perpetual wars. Let's choose again. The choice is between liberty or tyranny.
