Two things you can do for Liberty

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
During my campaign for State Senate, many of you did a tremondous amount of work in support of Liberty.  I am very grateful to you for that, and I would like to suggest two additional ways you can further advance our mutual belief in small government.
Please allow me to humbly suggest the following two things you can do:
1) Join the Libertarian Party
2) Support Congressman Ron Paul in the Republican Primary in Virginia on Feb. 12, and join a Ron Paul Meetup group.
Allow me to briefly elaborate on both of these.
Why join the LP?
I remain convinced that the role of so-called "third parties" in our country is incredibly important.  While it is always very difficult to win as a third party candidate, third parties play a very important role of driving the debate even when we don't win.  A strong pro-freedom third party like the Libertarian Party helps to keep the Democrats and Republicans "honest", and reminds them of the principles our country was founded on.  In races where we have strong candidates, we have a major impact on the issues discussed and hopefully can help steer other candidates to take stronger positions on the issues we agree with them on, and force them to defend big-government stances on the issues where we disagree with them.
This is very important, because many times the other candidates won't even touch on the critical issues that Libertarians bring up.
With that in mind, I'd like to encourage you to join the Libertarian Party too.  You can join online at www.LP.org.  If you would like to join our local affiliate, the Jefferson Area Libertarians, you can learn more about us at www.4JAL.org
How you can support Ron Paul
While the country is focused on the Iowa caucuses on January 3 and the New Hampshire primary on January 8, we in Virginia will be voting in a presidential primary (for Republican or Democratic candidates) on February 12.
Only one candidate in either of the parties that will be voting on February 12 articulates the ideas of individual liberty and personal responsibility that motivated me to run for the State Senate.  That person is Congressman Ron Paul of Texas, who has changed the conversation among the various Republican candidates by being unabashedly libertarian in his approach to the issues.  He is the only candidate who explicitly calls for laws to be authorized by the U.S. Constitution before they are passed by Congress or approved by the President.
Across Virginia, grassroots support for Ron Paul has been growing.  Much of this support is organized through Meet-Up Groups around the state, in Hampton Roads, in Charlottesville, in Arlington, in Centreville, in Richmond, in Harrisonburg, and in many other areas.
If you haven't yet joined a Ron Paul Meet-Up Group near you, I encourage you to do it today.  You can find a list of Ron Paul Meet-Ups here: http://www.meetup.com/search/?keywords=ron+paul&jsCountry=us
You don't have to agree with Ron Paul on everything.  I don't.  But there is no doubt in my mind that regardless of his ultimate success, he is driving the debate towards Liberty like no Presidential candidate has done in my lifetime.  That alone is worth supporting.
I thank you all again for your support and hard work for Liberty during my campaign, and I wish you the best in your future work for Liberty, whatever form that may take.  Finally, I wish you and your family a joyous and safe Christmas and holiday season.
Thank you,
Arin Sime
