SMITHER CALLS FOR SEKULA-GIBBS' WITHDRAWAL

"It is time for Sekula-Gibbs to withdraw as a
candidate for Congress from District 22," Bob Smither
announced Sunday.  "Let's be honest and cut through
all the smoke and mirrors.  We are 30 days from
election day, and here are the cold, hard facts:

"1.  Shelley Sekula-Gibbs, the Republican with the
hyhenated name, has no chance to win a write-in
campaign.  One straw poll shows she has only 11% real
write-in committed support.

"2.  I am on the ballot; Sekula-Gibbs is not.

"3.  Democrat Lampson, even with his $3 million war
chest from special interests who, by the way, will
want to be repaid, is out of step with the values of
District 22 voters.  He is an old time, big spending
Nancy Pelosi, Charlie Rangel Democrat who believes
'government is the solution' in a very conservative
district that believes 'government is the problem'.

"4.  Admittedly, I cannot win without Republican
support and votes from conservatives across the
political party spectrum.

"For the good of the district and in the best
interests of the nation, I call upon Sekula-Gibbs to
withdraw from this race and for her to urge all
conservative Republicans to vote for me in November.

"In return, I pledge the following:

"1.  to represent the district as a conciliator, and
not a divider, by meeting monthly with conservative
leaders of both major parties in each of the
district's counties to seek common ground on difficult
problems that Congress will face over the next two
years;

"2.  to cast our precious district vote only in a
fiscally conservative manner, especially with the goal
of reducing Federal spending, year over year, by at
least $1, a feat not accomplished in a century;

"3.  to represent to the best of my ability the true
conservative values for the benefit of District 22 and
the nation.

"Let's be honest:  the American people are fed up with
the strife between Republicans and Democrats and want
a conservative American, not party, approach to the
difficulties we face.  The decisions we make over the
next two years will affect our children and our
grandchildren.

"Let's work together to honor our children by doing
the right thing today.  I come to you without major
political party support and with no special interest
backing.  I come to you as a citizen just like you,
with a dose of common sense, honesty, and
understanding of the value of a hard-earned tax
dollar."

Kevin Tunstall, Smither's campaign manager, suggested
district voters should compare Bob Smither, however
modestly, to the Jimmy Stewart character in the movie
"Mr. Smith Goes to Washington".

"Just like Jimmy Stewart, Bob is a tall, lanky, slow
talking, bright, honest, common sense kind of
'Everyman' who is committed to doing the right thing
no matter the cost," Tunstall suggested.

Smither, a Phd electrical engineer who owns his own
small company, has reached 25% in the polls as the
Libertarian Party's candidate for Congress in Tom
DeLay's old district.
