Candidate gets apology for police actions

Mission is apologizing to a political candidate who was stopped from campaigning at a public event.

Mayor Laura McConwell said Tuesday that city officials and police officers overstepped their bounds Sept. 16 when they asked Jason Peck to leave the city’s Arts & Eats Festival. Peck, a Libertarian candidate for the Kansas House, had been distributing campaign literature in the streets.

Peck said he went from “shaking hands and kissing babies” to being escorted away by four police officers. Peck said a council member told him his campaigning was unfair to his opponents, Republican incumbent Ed O’Malley and Democrat Andy Sandler, because they paid for booths.

Mission will use findings from an internal review to ensure something similar doesn’t happen again, McConwell said.
