Without Further Delay I give you Bob Smither

Well!  This has been a lot more interesting that I thought it would be.
Back in December, 2005, I applied for the nomination of the Libertarian
Party to run for Congress in Congressional District 22.  This was Tom
DeLay's district at the time.

I was motivated to run by what I thought was a shameful, overbearing
response by FEMA to the victims of Katrina, as well as a comment by my
18 year old son - something to the effect of "You sure gripe a lot
about
the government, but I don't see you doing much."

Four other Libertarians expressed an interest in this race, and two of
us campaigned for the nomination.  I was nominated at the District
Convention held at the University of Houston on March 25th.  My
opponent
has become the LP chair of the county that I live in and is helping me
a
lot with my campaign.

What has made this race so interesting from my standpoint and that of
the Libertarian Party is the maneuvering of Tom DeLay.  On April 4,
after winning the Republican primary, he announced that he was moving
to
Virginia, therefore becoming "ineligible" to run for Congress.  Under
certain conditions, the Rs would have been able to replace him on the
ballot, but the courts have held that he effectively withdrew, meaning
that he cannot be replaced.  Someone gave the Rs very bad legal advise.
This move left the Rs with the choice of running Tom DeLay (who does
not
want to run and has announced that he is now a citizen of Virginia) or
running nobody.

Yesterday, Mr. DeLay stated that he will formally withdraw, so that as
of today there are only two names on the ballot - myself and the
Democrat candidate Nick Lampson.  This in a district that is very
conservative and very Republican.

The Rs are considering running a write in candidate at this time, but
many observers consider this to be ill advised.

I have focused my campaign on the idea of Constitutional Integrity, by
which I mean a return of the federal government to the wisdom and
bounds
of our Constitution.

My web site is

about my campaign.  If you like what you see, please consider making a
donation.  Donations can be mailed to:

  Houston, Texas  77219-1834

or using a credit card on my campaign site.  I could really use some
resources to help me gain name recognition in this rather large
district.

I am in the process of getting some yard signs made and will use
donations to help me order a larger quantity.

Thanks for reading, please visit my site.
